Trade Compliance Specialist

The position

We are currently looking for a Trade Compliance Specialist for the HBK Trade Compliance Team.

Our new team member will support the Trade Compliance Team in ensuring global trade compliance, with a focus on supporting compliance in terms of exports from and imports to the United Kingdom. Together with the local Trade Compliance Officer, you will be based in Royston, United Kingdom (working from home is possible for 3 to 4 days per week) and you will report to the HBK Group Trade Compliance Manager based in Darmstadt, Germany.

This position is well suited for an experienced candidate, looking to contribute to their place of work whilst working in an autonomous manner within a given framework and given reporting lines. The ideal candidate is a specialist passionate about their chosen field, who will be able to add value to a growing organisation in both the short and long term.

Primary responsibilities

Together with the HBK Trade Compliance Team you will be responsible for the maintenance and deployment of the HBK Trade Compliance policy and supporting procedures and you will train others in the relevant procedures.

After appropriate orientation, your daily work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Staying current on global import and export regulations, policies and other applicable governmental initiatives, including, but not limited to, Brexit
  • Being a contact for export and import related inquiries from external stakeholders including, but not limited to, enquiries from export controls and customs authorities, other HBK/Spectris group companies, distributors and representatives and internal functions such as sales, order handling and logistic colleagues to ensure compliance with all applicable trade controls and requirements
  • Reviewing of sales orders and managing various kinds of export compliance issues, such as export licence determinations; licences and approvals (e.g. F680s); management (incl. administration and maintenance) of the companies’ SPIRE and SNAP-R account; ensuring proper end-user documentation is obtained and verified
  • Providing guidance in trade compliance related contract matters (e.g. Technical Assistance Agreements) and supporting in the implementation of Technology Control Plans
  • Assigning and verifying Export Control Classifications and HS tariff codes
  • Maintain productive relationships with Government regulators (e.g. the UK Department for International Trade, UK MOD, HMRC, US Department of State, US Department of Commerce) and other external stakeholders
  • Facilitating and supporting external (e.g. Export Control Joint Unit) and internal compliance audits and assessments and implementing any required/necessary corrective actions
  • Driving continuous improvement, best practices and standardisation through the understanding of global trade regulations
  • Ensure reporting of key trade compliance matters to the HBK Group Trade Compliance Manager and International Trade Compliance Manager Spectris, as appropriate

Professional qualifications

What you need to make the difference is passion for trade compliance and a sense for the importance of the topic. We are also looking for:

  • A bachelor's degree in foreign trade, economics, law or related
  • relevant professional experience in trade compliance
  • Operational knowledge of UK statutory regulations relating to import/export compliance matters including Export Licencing for Military List and Dual-Use Goods (particularly SIELS and OGELs) and UK/EU Customs regulations
  • Operational knowledge of Foreign export laws and regulations, particularly US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), US Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and EU Member States
  • Operational Knowledge of the WTO tariff valuation rules and basic experience with assigning and maintaining tariff codes
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills with the ability to communicate and interact at all levels and support decision making based on credible knowledge of International Trade
  • Ability to easily understand complex technical products. This could have been gained from previous experience in a similar manufacturing company
  • Experience with an enterprise-class ERP system desirable (SAP / Oracle preferred) and Word, Excel and other standard office tools
