Overview

We are looking for a Senior Counsel - International Trade Affairs based in Stamford, Connecticut to lead various legal and compliance initiatives in the United States.

Reporting to the Head of North America Legal Affairs, this crucial role will partner with various stakeholders across the Beiersdorf business.

This role would: support Beiersdorf through all facets of the evolving global trade regulatory landscape with an emphasis on trade compliance, customs, sanctions, supply and procurement; advise on cross-border transactions and a wide range of international trade compliance matters and sanctions; collaborate closely with Beiersdorf Corporate Customs & International Trade department in developing and enhancing both US and non-US compliance processes; coordinate with external legal counsel, as needed, and provide legal advice to the company’s global business units and departments.

Responsibilities

Provide expertise and oversight on a broad range of customs, import, anti-dumping and countervailing duties, exports, sanctions, and other trade law compliance laws and regulations in the Americas region.

Provide legal oversight, monitoring and advice to relevant businesses departments on trade compliance matters, business trade strategies, and trade elements in contracts and transactions as related to import, export, and sanctions laws and regulations

Conduct and navigate trade compliance risk assessments, investigations, and audits, develop corrective action plans

In partnership with the headquarter Corporate Customs & International Trade (CCIT) department, ensure that Beiersdorf’s trade compliance program development – including policies, procedures and automated systems – comports with regulatory requirements and the CCIT trade transformation strategy

Monitor and update stakeholders on the global legal, regulatory and legislative changes

Aid operational trade compliance teams with implementation of any required changes to policies

In coordination with CCIT, steer interactions with trade-related government regulators; prepare and handle responses to internal and external audits and government inquiries

Deal with diverse constituencies of internal and external parties including regulators, external counsel, customers and vendors, and business and functional leaders;

Assist with merger, acquisition and divestiture activities involving trade compliance

Support Beiersdorf Headquarter Trade Compliance and the Trade Compliance Management System

Ensure accurate registration of export control-relevant data in ERP and other systems, including reporting obligations to the US authorities

Train employees and manufacturers business partners on US sanctions and EAR

Qualifications

  • Doctorate of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from an accredited law school/university required
  • A member, in good standing of a U.S. State Bar with the ability to practice law in Connecticut or Connecticut In-House Counsel bar
  • 7-10 years of experience as Legal Counsel in a similar position in the legal department of an international corporation or in an international business law firm
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Strong, clear, concise communication skills that can adapt based on the audience; comfort in communicating to internal clients at all levels of the organization
  • Experience with drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex commercial contracts and documents
  • Consumer products or in-house counsel experience a plus
  • Knowledge and experience of North American legal system, rules and regulations
  • Positive team member and active contributor in a team environment
  • Team-oriented, forward-thinking approach
  • Strong negotiation and facilitation skills
  • Excellent time management skills to handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong attention to detail, responsive and well organize
  • Must be pro-active and have creative problem solving skills
  • The ability to travel domestically and internationally (<30%)
