Main Objective:
Responsibilities include performing mechanical and biomechanical research in support of internal test requests, and to supervise these same activities for a team of engineers and specialists.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise biomechanical testing staff to facilitate the internal needs regarding product development, verification, and regulatory submission
- Supervise research to facilitate evaluation of new technologies and design concepts
- Provide leadership to staff regarding development, implementation, and interpretation of results of biomechanical testing
- Monitor staff workloads, identify inefficiencies, and report to upper management regarding resource management and requirements
- Participate in the Design History process during product development with specific responsibility in facilitating verification and regulatory activities
- Develop and implement testing procedures and methods.
- Facilitate identification of new technologies that may benefit Arthrex product development
- Design and implement post-market research to support existing devices and technologies
- Audit and create technical reports, maintain and create various engineering test environments, and disseminate information to facilitate product development decision making.
- Provide support to Engineering Teams, Legal, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Product Management, Sterilization, and Marketing departments as needed.
- Ensure training of direct reports to support data integrity and promote lab safety.
- Monitor and support the professional development of the research staff.
- Track personal and team metrics and report to upper management.
- Promote and facilitate the strategic plan and goals of the Orthopedic Research Department.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred
- 5 years of experience in a lab environment or in engineering required
Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:
- Should have basic understanding of metal and polymer properties and mechanical and chemical test equipment.
- Must be able to use mechanical test lab equipment in a proficient manner to acquire data/test results.
- Good documentation skills and the ability to write accurate test procedures/summaries/reports upon completion of requested tests required.
- Knowledge of basic anatomy and ASTM standards for medical devices a plus.
- Experience in leading a team is a plus.
Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:
Instruments used will include Materials Testing Systems, Molecular Weight equipment, Differential Scanning calorimeters, custom made testing apparatuses, and data acquisition systems.
