The Opportunity

Within the next three years, we aim to double our team and reach 8.7M farmers. As we continue expanding, we are growing our global team of exceptional individuals who seek solutions to pressing development problems. The new Director of Global Finance will join the team at a moment of building and growth. This role will need to cultivate the team, evolve systems and approaches to bring Digital Green into the next phase. In particular, the Director of Global Finance will guide long-term, strategic decisions and ensure the highest standard of global financial management. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the new Director will oversee all finance and accounting functions and ensure the Finance team’s systems align with our strategic goals. The new Director will not only provide strategic insight to senior management but also support the Board’s Investment and Audit committees. As the finance team leader, the new Director of Global Finance will lead a dynamic team of professionals including a Controller, two senior Grants Managers, and collaborate with eight accountants and financial analysts across Asia, the US, and Africa.

This position communicates with a diverse staff in multiple locations using email, video and audio conference technology. This position must be able to communicate and collaborate effectively globally.

 

Strategic Leadership & Governance Support

  • Serve as a key member of the leadership of our Internal Operations team
  • Contribute to the development of Digital Green’s strategic goals and objectives
  • Provide counsel, analysis and recommendations on strategies to ensure financial success of the organization to the COO and broader DG Executive Team.
  • Responsible for preparation and presentation of the financial packet for the executive team and for Board and relevant Committees.
  • Provide key staff support to the Investment & Audit Committee (coordination, agenda development, etc.)
  • Identify risk areas and mitigation strategies in finance and partner with other Internal Ops team leaders to manage organizational risk

Finance, Accounting & Grants Management

  • Oversee the development and implementation of financial policies, systems, and procedures that will support organizational stability and growth in finance functions.
  • Lead and coordinate the annual budgeting process in collaboration with finance team leads, COO and executive team. 
  • Lead finance team in developing long term financial planning for Digital Green, bringing together finance, strategy and business development. Identify and propose options for investment planning for the organization.
  • Lead the Global Finance team in producing timely and accurate financial reporting. Oversee the preparation and communication of monthly, quarterly and annual financial updates and analyses. Create tools or reports that support timely organizational decision making.
  • Oversee Grants Management team, policies and processes around donor compliance and sub-award management.
  • In partnership with the Controller, ensure that global financial management systems, activities, internal controls and audits are aligned with Accounting Team policies, processes and timelines.
  • Lead work of the Global Finance team. In partnership with Controller, ensure financial operations of DG country offices units have smooth functioning and efficient workflow.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve the staffing model, systems, workflows, and processes to ensure effectiveness, cost efficiency, and legal compliance. In partnership with Controller, drive DG’s accounting software transition.
  • Ensure responsiveness and quality customer service that effectively responds to ad-hoc financial reporting, trend and analysis requests to facilitate informed decision-making by management.
  • In conjunction with the Investment Committee and outside investment managers, oversee the organization’s socially conscious investment portfolio

Team Development/Leadership

  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities; and monitor and evaluate results.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.
  • Develop a workforce plan to optimize how the finance team are organized; Recruit, and onboard staff to address as needed

 

This position will be based in the US but is remote, and the individual may be based out of the following jurisdictions: California, Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., or Washington.

 


  • Requires bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration (with an emphasis in accounting or finance). CPA preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of senior level accounting/financial experience with global non-profit organizations ($15M+), experience working in global organizations with multiple currencies, multiple programs, with diverse funding streams across restricted and unrestricted funders, including experience working with USAID funding.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP accounting rules, nonprofit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting. US Government grant and contract management.
  • Experience operating in multiple currencies and managing currency risk.
  • Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization. Experience with accounting software transitions preferred.

  • Strong financial modeling, budgeting, and analytical skills utilizing advanced Excel techniques.
  • Outstanding communication with demonstrated highly effective presentation and training skills

 

The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $180,000. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be commensurate with their relevant experience and cost of living indicators based on the state of residence.
