Full Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Production Editor for Macmillan Adult Trade. This role will production-edit approximately 15 to 20 fiction/nonfiction books at a time. They will manage the production editorial process from assessing manuscripts for copyediting needs to hiring and managing freelancers to proofreading and indexing page proofs as well as checking all stages of text, photo inserts, and covers from manuscript to finished books. In addition, they will handle simultaneous ebook production for most of their titles. They will be responsible for quality control throughout the process. Proficiency with digital copyediting and routing required as well as knowledge of workflow systems.

This will be a 6 month contract, open for remote work!

What you'll do:

  • Assess fiction and nonfiction (including complex highly designed and/or illustrated nonfiction) manuscripts and accompanying art to determine specific copyediting required. Coding design elements using styles. Hire freelance copyeditors and apprise them of the hourly rate and total estimated cost of job, as well as inform them of the type of work that the manuscripts will require. Prepare design memos and transmit duplicate manuscripts to design. Liaise with design for complicated titles. Input vetting changes in the manuscript if the legal department has reviewed the manuscript. Review copyeditors’ work and transmit the copyedited manuscripts to editorial for authors’ review. After the authors have reviewed the copyedited manuscripts, review all queries to ensure that they have been resolved, check the authors’ and copyeditors’ changes to make sure that they are clear and correct, and ensure that all design elements are coded properly before transmitting the manuscripts to design for composition. Ensure quality is maintained.
  • Assess fiction and nonfiction (including complex highly designed and/or illustrated nonfiction) first pass and second pass page proofs to determine which freelance proofreaders and/or indexers are required. Hire proofreaders and indexers; apprise them of the hourly rate and estimated total cost of the project, and inform them of any special concerns regarding the project. Transmit the first pass and second pass page proofs to editorial for authors’/editors’ review. After the first pass has been proofread, collate the authors’ and proofreaders’ corrections and review all corrections and queries. Check corrections at second pass and final pass. Traffic the final pass to editorial for signoff before transmitting to design. Review text blues/proofs if needed. Copyedit and proofread cover copy and cover mechanicals and proofs. Copyedit and proofread photo insert materials. Assist in training production editors and communicating procedural changes to production editors. Some mentorship of junior staff may be required.
  • Meeting/communicating with designers/editors/production managers/art dept/managing editors/legal dept/authors as needed concerning: scheduling; revisions suggested by copyeditors or proofreaders; unusually high copyediting, proofreading, and indexing costs, or high correction costs due to many corrections marked at first or second pass by proofreaders or authors; complying with Legal Department directives.
  • Communicate in a professional and timely manner with publishers, managing editors, designers, art, editorial, and production managers regarding status of projects and route related materials to editors, designers, production managers. Update progress of projects in various digital tracking systems, using correct file-naming conventions and following procedures.
  • Provide task- and project-specific support for other production editors to ensure that coverage is maintained during planned vacation and discretionary days

What you'll bring:

  • Background in adult trade fiction and nonfiction
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, anticipating problems, troubleshooting solutions, and prioritizing
  • Strong working knowledge of grammar and punctuation, including expertise with the Chicago Manual of Style, with an aptitude for enforcing style rules while also respecting author voice
  • Meticulous attention to detail; work well under pressure; good oral and verbal communication
  • Ability to meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects at once
  • Work well with others in a tactful manner, displaying common sense and initiative.

Ideal Experience:

  • Five to seven years’ experience as a production editor, preferably in adult trade fiction/nonfiction
  • Copyediting and proofreading at a high level
  • Technical proficiency in MS Word, Acrobat PDF markup tools, and Workflow/Metadata systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience


As a contractor, you will be employed through a third party (Headway).
