Job Summary:

As a member of TechnoServe’s Food Processing Practice, collaborate with the Program Manager and Director to operate as a center of excellence for TechnoServe’s food processing programs. Serve as a technical advisor to food processing programs to help identify opportunities, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure high quality delivery of food processing interventions with a particular focus on topics such as food quality and safety, good manufacturing practices and certifications such as HAACP and FSSC. Provide technical input to develop concept notes and proposals for new and expanded program opportunities. Support adoption of best practices, methodologies, and tools by food processing programs, and develop key learning materials, knowledge management products, and case studies.

Primary Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical advisory (sharing best practices and providing case-specific guidance) to food processing program staff as they lead activities including: industry assessments; client selection; one-on-one assistance to client companies (business process optimization, raw material sourcing efficiencies, marketing to retailers serving low-income consumers, etc); group trainings for food sector stakeholders on topics of interest (HAACP, GMP, fortification, etc); and engaging with ecosystem actors (associations, regulators, laboratories, universities, business service providers). Program staff to be supported include: Food Processing Specialists; Business Advisors; Market Linkage Specialists; and Partner Intervention Managers.
  • Provide technical input to develop concept notes and proposals for new and expanded food processing programs.
  • Build a comprehensive archive of best practices (tools, manuals, other resources) that food processing program staff can utilize and reference. Develop new materials, ie. curricula for training with food sector stakeholders, that food processing programs can tailor to their unique contexts.
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing across food processing programs (ie. preparing and delivering webinars, other). Ensure the latest and greatest learnings and methods are being adopted.
  • Hold regular check-ins with the leads of TechnoServe’s food processing programs. Participate in key work planning sessions to facilitate support services from the Food Processing Practice.
  • Support to some programs will include travel (based on program needs and budget)
  • Coordinate with the Practice’s Senior Program Manager on practice support functions, and report into the Food Systems Lead.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BSc (Masters preferred) in food science, engineering, nutrition, economics, agriculture and/or business
  • Minimum of seven years of experience with a Masters degree or 10 years with a Bachelor’s degree
  • Deep understanding of the food processing industry and the ecosystem within which it operates
  • Implementation experience addressing industry challenges, either as a consultant, processor or development partner
  • Deep understanding and know-how related to food quality and safety in processing facilities, good manufacturing practices, and obtaining certifications such as HAACP, FSSC and other quality systems and standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in developing countries, particularly Africa
  • Understanding of the challenges of food processing in Africa, technical, regulatory and business
  • Proven track record of providing advisory services
  • Understanding of value chain development and development imperatives that go beyond production, i.e. inclusivity, gender, nutrition
  • Experience with regional and international trade as it relates to the importing of packaging materials, necessary inputs, raw materials, and the export of processed products,
  • Experience developing good practices (tools, manuals, other resources) and working with a diverse team to co-develop new materials
  • Experience with developing or supporting upward and downward linkages with the processing sector
  • Experience supporting value chain actors to access finance for business growth

Travel: Up to 30% based on program needs and budget

We prefer candidates in an east or southern African country where TechnoServe has operations and will also consider candidates based in the US. TechnoServe will not provide sponsorship or work authorization for this position, and all applicants must have work authorization in the country from which they are applying. If you are located within 50 miles from our Arlington, VA, Headquarters, you will be expected to work from HQ on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
