Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced attorney, Abbott’s global Legal Regulatory and Compliance department, who will be responsible for counseling all of Abbott’s global business on global anti-corruption and trade compliance laws and regulations and collaborating with cross-functional teams to effectively resolve complex legal issues.

Technical Skills:

The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of anti-corruption and trade compliance laws and regulations, as well as industry-leading practices and standards, and demonstrated expertise in legal analysis, staying abreast of current external developments and enforcement trends, and providing practical guidance to business clients.

Core job responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the legal “subject matter expert” on a range of anti-corruption, anti-bribery, and trade compliance matters and other applicable laws (e.g., Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, UK Bribery Act, U.S. trade sanctions laws and regulations, anti-boycott restrictions, export controls);
  • Keeping business and Legal colleagues informed of relevant changes in laws and regulations relating to anti-corruption and international trade compliance;
  • Providing leadership, guidance and support to clients and other attorneys in Legal Division;
  • Interacting with and providing legal and strategic guidance to senior management and functional organizational leadership;
  • Developing, periodically revising, managing and assisting in the implementation and maintenance of the Company's anti-corruption and trade compliance policies and procedures and ensuring business/organizational adaptation, as needed;
  • Providing anti-corruption and trade-related legal advice concerning business transactions, including reviewing contracts with 3rd parties, performing related legal due diligence and drafting and negotiating applicable provisions.

  • Collaboration: Firm understanding of available legal, functional, and business resources and ability to integrate information from various sources to achieve business results, including breaking down boundaries to create alignment as necessary, in a complex, global, matrixed environment.
  • Anticipation: Holistic, big picture thinker, who anticipates changes in law, enforcement, and/or business objectives and adapts approach as necessary to manage risks effectively and mitigate issues before they arise.
  • Influencing Skills: Build strong relationships with business partners to tactfully influence and gain their support to drive desired outcomes. Represent Abbott externally to customers, suppliers, or government agencies; and resolve legal issues using negotiation skills and legal expertise.

Training/Experience Required:

  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, strong academic background, and admitted to a US state bar in good standing; appropriate licensure to practice law
  • 8+ years of experience providing legal counsel on anti-corruption and/or trade compliance issues in a large corporation or law firm
  • Health care or other regulated industry experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in fast-paced environment and exercise sound commercial and legal judgment
  • Ability to independently handle complex matters with minimal supervision, and understand which issues to elevate to senior management and appropriate timing for doing so
  • In addition to top-notch legal skills and a strong ethical center, excellent interpersonal, strategic thinking, communication and organizational skills
