The Johnson & Johnson Law Department is recruiting for a Global Trade Compliance Counsel to provide strategic leadership, legal guidance, and overall coordination of legal services and compliant execution in this critical area.

The Global Trade Compliance Counsel has global responsibility for providing strategic and legal expertise on critical aspects of global trade compliance across businesses, including sanctions advisory, import/customs advice, transaction and export reviews, restricted party screening, and obtaining required sanctions/export licenses and other authorizations from governmental entities. This position partners with business and risk management and compliance functions in shaping, advancing, and implementing the global trade compliance governance structure, overall strategy, including co-developing high-impact solutions in Johnson & Johnson’s business operations and supply chain that meet regulatory commitments and drive efficiency and agility.

The main responsibilities of the Global Trade Compliance Counsel include:

  • Providing legal counsel to Executives and Senior Leaders on issues and risks related to trade compliance, with a particular focus on sanctions and export controls, including guidance on appropriate controls and governance frameworks.
  • Creating and owning the framework for providing consolidated legal guidance to empower the business to make decisions that support compliant and sustainable growth.
  • Leading and partnering with businesses and operational teams to shape, rapidly advance and implement our Global Trade Compliance strategy and governance structure.
  • Tracking, interpreting, shaping and advising on proliferating global legislation/regulation in the trade compliance space.
  • Staying abreast of and sharing relevant legislation/regulation, trends and risks; translating the impact of such changes to the business and driving any change management required to ensure compliance with such changes.
  • Developing and implementing new legal guidelines, processes and controls for trade compliance, and enhancing other foundational elements of an effective trade compliance program.
  • Inputting into critical updates to global policies and procedures related to trade compliance, including advice related to appropriateness of restricted party screening, due diligence and third party controls.
  • Supporting primary and ad hoc global trade compliance communications and training.
  • Assisting with and developing frameworks for reviews, regular monitoring, audits, investigations, and related disclosures.
  • Leading the management of the risk analysis of trade compliance issues with relevant attorneys within the Johnson & Johnson Law Department as well as other Johnson & Johnson subject matter experts, and managing the communication of risks and recommended action plans to the appropriate decision-makers.
  • Partnering across the Johnson & Johnson Law Department and with other subject matter experts to respond to inquiries from customers, government agencies, media and other stakeholders.
  • Managing the engagement of outside counsel and budget, and building the optimal legal and compliance structure to support business needs.

This position will be located at J&J World Headquarters in New Brunswick, NJ and potentially other J&J sites in NJ, PA, Washington DC or Brussels and will include up to 20% international travel.


  • A licensed attorney with a minimum of 15 years of relevant legal experience is required.
  • Experience practicing in trade compliance, including providing export controls and sanctions legal and compliance advice is required.
  • Healthcare industry experience highly preferred.
  • Multi-country and sector experience across geographies of varied sizes and businesses is preferred.
  • Proven track record to shape complex global programs and drive their implementation is preferred.
  • Proven track record of identifying, quantifying, and mitigating risk in a balanced manner, so as to meet ethical, legal and compliance standards and business objectives.
  • Proven ability to provide outstanding legal services to, and interact with, a range of senior executives and to ensure high ethical, legal and compliance standards.
  • Excellent strategic and analytical skills with a proven ability to adjust and thrive in an ambiguous and rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to take a pragmatic approach, with a willingness to proactively engage with business colleagues to find solutions and implement action plans that are sustainable.

For U.S. applicants, in accordance with applicable disclosure requirements, the anticipated base pay range for this position is $159,000 to $238,000. The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.
